about
Girl in the Moon is a folksy lil tune I wrote right after the release of my debut album, Songs to the Monster Under My Bed. I loved working on that album - it was cathartic and healing and I’ve never been prouder of anything I’ve ever made. But, it was also honestly a really emotionally difficult process - writing and workshopping those songs felt like digging into the deepest pits of my soul to mine diamonds. After I released the album, I took a little break from writing songs about my deepest fears and traumas and tried my hand at writing about things that made me happy - the stuff I wrote didn’t feel like *diamonds* (polished and precious), but they felt like flowers (still beautiful and whereas mining diamonds actively harms the earth, planting new flowers helps to heal it). Girl in the Moon is a song about finding people who appreciate your flowers just as much, if not more, than your diamonds - people that want you to be happy and healthy and who value you for YOU and not for the things you create. It’s about teaching yourself that you don’t owe anyone (not even yourself) your suffering. It’s about finding the beauty and the joy in your *imperfect* art - creating things that feel good to create. It’s about comfort and safety and peace and as of October 22, 2021 (my 20th birthday) it is available to stream everywhere!

Lyrics:
I dug and I mined
Gold and diamonds I longed to find
I scraped up my hands cause I didn’t have a shovel
I scraped up my feet cause I didn’t have shoes
I cracked my bones apart
Stuck five fingers under my heart
And pulled out a diamond, perfect and clear
Gave it to you, my darling, my dear
Well you took it and thanked me but you didn’t stay
Guess you and the sun wanted to go away
You smiled and told me that you’d be back soon
And left me alone with the girl in the moon
The girl in the moon and I
Stare at the endless sky
There are no stars in the night
The nearby city’s too bright
She tells me the stars are coming back soon
So I sit and wait with the girl in the moon
We waited for years and for years
Cried a billion sparkling tears
She said she was lonely, I said I was too
I said I was hurting, she said she was blue
So crafted our tears into new stars
And she put ointment on all my scars
The sky glittered, we started to sing
And we weren’t waiting for anything
The girl in the moon and I
Stare at the endless sky
The stars are all homemade
Cause all our work is unpaid
She tells me a rhyme ‘bout a dish and a spoon
Trading bedtime stories with the girl in the moon
Now I plant and I sow
The prettiest flowers that ever did grow
I muddy up my hands cause I don’t like shovels
I muddy up my feet cause I don’t like shoes
My chest was still broken apart
So I planted a seed under my heart
Won’t grow into diamonds, won’t grow into gold
But it’ll be pretty, at least I am told
The girl in the moon and I
Stare at the endless sky
I give her the flowers that I grow
And she gives me her radiant glow
I offered a diamond, one warm day at noon
But she prefers flowers, my girl in the moon
